How to Name Range and Use Excel Name Manager

Suppose you have a range A1: A7 which contains a payroll. You can create a salary range name to make it easier to perform a calculation. Excel's understanding of naming ranges is widely used in lookup function formulas. There are 3 ways to name ranges, namely using Namebox, Create From Selection, and Define Name.

Fundamentals of Writing Range Names

- Range names may be preceded by valid characters, namely letters (a-Z), underscore (_) or              backslash (/).

- Range names cannot contain spaces.

Maximum of 255 characters.

Not case-sensitive, eg range name "Example" is the same as "COntoH".

Should not use names such as cell addresses.

Name the Range Namebox

Using Namebox is the easiest way to implement. The Namebox is to the left of the formula column.

1. Highlight the range to be named

2. Click Namebox

3. Press Enter

Name the Range with Create From Selection

By using Create From Selection, you can create a range name at once. Following are the steps using Create From Selection.

1. Highlight a range

2. Click Create From Selection on the Formula Ribbon

3. Check the Command to be used.








- Top row uses the top cell row as the name of the cell with its members in the name column

- Left column uses the leftmost cell column as the name of the cell with its members in that row name.

- Bottom row uses the row of the top column as the name of the cell with its members in that name    column.

- Right column uses the rightmost column row as the cell name with its members in that row name

4. Klik OK

Example of Using Top Row

For example, a range per column will be created with the name as the top cell of each column in the following table.




















So that you get the name range in the Name Manager, click Name Manager on the Formula Ribbon.












Seen in the picture the name of the insurance range with cell members J4 to J7, namely Ultimate, Premium, Premium, and Regular. Likewise for so on.

Name the Range with the Defines Name Option

Here are the steps for using the Defines Name Option

1. Highlight the range to be named
2. Click Define Name on the formula Ribbon
3. So the New Name window opens
4. Click OK

Name Manager

Name Manager is a window used for name range management in Microsoft Excel. You can open it via the Formula Ribbon, click Name Manager. By using the Name Manager you can change, delete, and add new range names manually.
